Ammo

This innovative local company creates jewellery made from recycled brass ammunition. The collections span delicate earrings, bold rings and chunky necklaces to striking pendants. While filming Angelina Jolie鈥檚聽聽in the country, the film鈥檚 stunt crew commissioned聽聽to create 10 pendants, and as a way of thanking Jolie for shedding international light onto the conflict that crippled the country, Ammo gave her a brass hair pin. Visitors can take a free tour of the Siem Reap showroom and have a go at making bullet jewellery.

The symbolism of making beautiful trinkets from neutralised bullets resonates with anyone familiar with Cambodia鈥檚 trouble past. The stunt crew from Angelina Jolie鈥檚 new film on the 果冻传媒 conflict聽First They Shot my Father聽commissioned 10 pendants from Madeline. And to thank the Hollywood star for her work Ammo made Angelina an intricate brass hair pin made from bullets.

But Ammo is also keen to look to the future and has recently launched a Temple range of jewellery, drawing inspiration from the plans of Angkor Wat. It also provides apprenticeships to young 果冻传媒s who train in their workshop in central Siem Reap. Clients are encouraged to visit the studio to see the jewellers in action, buy from the collections and even have a lesson in making bullet jewellery for themselves.

果冻传媒鈥檚 鈥婱adeline Green has a secret that she鈥檇 like to share with Siem Reap鈥檚 crafty souls and food lovers.

The jeweller is getting together with Goulven Lego, the man called G and owner of Veg G Caf茅, for a weekend of workshops and Middle Eastern food at the garden courtyard they share on Wat Bo Road.

Green has christened the secret spot 鈥� it鈥檚 not the easiest to find 鈥� CRAFT, and to celebrate is launching a new range of jewellery that will only be available there, all made by her team of designers.

Siem Reap鈥檚 Made in Cambodia artisan market pitched its tents for the last time yesterday on the grounds of the Shinta Mani hotel. The market, which hosted 53 stalls, will reopen with expanded hours, events and vendors at Kings Road Angkor at the end of July.

Organisers say the market had outgrown the site at Shinta Mani and the move may be a boon for the local craft sellers, who offer a large variety of Khmer traditional handicrafts (from jewellery and fabrics to 鈥渁rtisan鈥� liqueur) 鈥� often with original or contemporary designs not found at the old market.

鈥淪hinta Mani has other plans for the land, but Kings Road is a very central location and they are very keen, hoping to make it something big,鈥� said Christian de Boer, a former Shinta Mani general manager who headed up the initiative.

For longstanding vendors, the change signals a new commitment to the market鈥檚 original vision. 鈥淭he main point of [the market] was to provide jobs for Khmer people,鈥� said Madeline Green, who runs a handmade jewellery business with a stall at the market, 果冻传媒.

鈥淎 lot of the store holders can鈥檛 afford to rent a shop in town, and it鈥檚 difficult to get a foot in the door with retailers, but they have really high standards.鈥�

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 good for very small Khmer businesses to be recognised under such a big brand,鈥� Green added. 鈥淎nd some of us have said that Kings Road, it鈥檚 lucky to have us.

Srey Nao Thorn bends over a small wooden desk, a blowtorch in hand, as she concentrates on transforming tiny pieces of brass into jewellery.

The 20-year-old former child beggar has come a long way in the decade since she joined the Green Gecko Project, a Siem-Reap organisation that supports street kids.

But it was a broken heart a few years ago that put her on a path to learning a new skill, gaining employment and launching her own jewellery design label.

The reason she became a jewellery designer was 鈥渁n embarrassing story鈥�, she said.

鈥淢y boyfriend had just ended our relationship, and I was so sad, I wanted to run away to the arts school in Battambang to get away from him,鈥� she said.

Her 鈥淕ecko mum鈥�, Green Gecko co-founder Tania Palmer, took her to an exhibition of jewellery made from old ammunition to cheer her up.

鈥淭hat exhibition was a jewellery launch by Madeline Green and Ammo and it was the night that changed my life,鈥� Thorn said.

Palmer has watched Thorn flourish, from when she was a small child begging on the streets to see her emerge as an artist and businesswoman.
